The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon — also known as the Korthals Griffon after its creator — is one of the most deliberately and systematically developed sporting breeds in history, created in the 1870s by Dutch breeder Eduard Karel Korthals with the explicit goal of producing the ultimate all-purpose hunting dog: a breed that could point, retrieve, and track on any terrain and in any weather, work equally well in field, forest, and water, and serve as a devoted family companion at the end of the day. Korthals spent over a decade crossing various European breeds — including the German Griffon, French Griffon, Pointer, Setter, and Spaniel — and kept meticulous breeding records to achieve his vision. The result was a breed so versatile and capable that it was quickly adopted by hunters across France, Germany, and the Netherlands, and Korthals himself called it "le meilleur chien de chasse" — "the supreme hunting dog." The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon's most distinctive feature is its coat: a harsh, straight, wiry outer coat over a thick, downy undercoat — a combination that provides exceptional protection in cold water, dense brush, and thorny cover while remaining relatively easy to maintain. The coat is always in steel gray with brown markings, or chestnut brown, and the breed's bushy eyebrows, mustache, and beard give it an unmistakably distinguished, almost professorial expression.
